Kylie's Crazy Crochet Coat

My old friend Kylie, who I only catch up with once in a blue moon, went along to a school occasion this evening, knowing full well that we would have one of our rare 'catch-ups'.
Bless her, she wore her crochet cardigan!  Her daughters were not overly impressed but Kylie was not to be deterred.  She did draw the line at wearing her crochet trousers too.

For Kylie's 40th last year she requested that everyone follow the theme (to some extent) or wearing some crochet.  I have seen the fantastic photos from that evening and there were some fairly wonderous sights!!

A friend gifted her this fab cardi after they had finished with it the night of the party.  Needless to say, she was delighted!!
I'm so glad she wore it tonight  :)

What it's all about...

As I was hunting out something tonight for another assignment I came across a great wee blog about music therapy.  As I read on, very bizarrely, the blog was made by a 3rd year OT student in Dunedin here last year!  He had attached  a clip of 'The Zimmers' (the UK version of the Young at Heart choir)

This clip kind of sums it up.  Even though it is music as opposed to craft or art, the premise is the same.  At the end of the day, this is what my blog has been all about.

Finding a passion
Connecting with people
Finding yourself
Adding to, or shaping your Occupational Identity
Participation and Satisfaction

(If you watch the video you will see what I mean)

Blanket is finished! (Apart from sewing in the ends...boring)

I set out about 6 months ago learning how to make afghan squares.  Finally crocheted them altogether to make a lovely blanket, which Fergus has taken semi-ownership over.

Ha! I knew it was good for the soul!!

Here is an article I found online about the benefits of craft.  While this isn't a highbrow peer reviewed article, it still gives a nice little overview of some of the benefits.
My occupation of crochet definitely has saved my sanity over the last 6 months, reduced stress and energised my soul socialising with like-minded friends.

REAP THE BENEFITS OF CRAFTING

As a caregiver, finding time for yourself is more than a good idea—it’s a healthy one.

BY:NANCY MONSON

Over three-quarters of American households have at least one family member who spends an average of 7.5 hours weekly engaged in crafting or hobbies. But crafting is not only popular—even cool now that Julia Roberts knits and a whole slew of celebrities, from Jennifer Aniston to Tony Bennett, paint—it’s healthy. Crafting is a great way for caregivers to help themselves. To tap into the healing power of crafts, follow these guidelines:

Find a craft you love—the more rhythmic and repetitive, the better. Passion for a craft keeps you interested, while the rhythmic and repetitive nature confers the mind-body benefit. Knitting, sewing, crocheting, woodworking and other rhythmic crafts are great choices.

Make time for your craft every week, and ideally every day. Don't think of this time as a self-indulgence, but a medical necessity. “View your craft as if it were a medication that you need to take every day for optimal benefit,” says Robert Reiner, PhD, a New York University psychologist whose landmark study documented the health benefits of sewing and other leisure activities. “If you stop taking the drug or doing the craft, you'll lose the benefit.”

“Even if it's difficult to schedule,” says Gail McMeekin, MSW, author of The 12 Secrets of Highly Creative Women and The Power of Positive Choices, “it's important to make time for crafts because they allow you to tune into your body and your creativity, to release frustration and tap into your deepest emotions.”

Create a space just for crafting. Set up a dedicated craft space in your home rather than occasionally commandeering the dining-room table. By doing so, you can craft whenever you have a few moments to spare. Put your craft supplies in a basket or in the car, or take over part of a room or office. Just try to find a space that is yours alone.

Take a class to advance your skills. An added bonus: You’ll meet other crafters. “Countless studies show that socializing with others is an effective way to release stress,” says Dr. Reiner. “We are social animals and we need to interact with other people to stay healthy.”

It's also empowering to find a mentor who can offer guidance when you need it. “Just make sure your mentor allows you to express yourself, rather than dictating that you do things her way,” advises McMeekin. “You want to release your creativity, not squash it.”

Find flow. “Flow,” a term coined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, PhD, author of Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, describes a state of complete absorption and intense joy. When you're in a state of flow, you lose track of time as you focus on the task at hand—a feeling akin to an athlete’s “being in the zone.” Over the past 30 years, Dr. Csikszentmihalyi has studied 3,000 people to find out how they achieve flow. Actively engaging in a craft about which you’re passionate, he found, is one way to do it. Sedentary activities such as watching television don't bring flow, but painting a landscape may.

The other key to achieving flow lies in setting goals. These benchmarks should be challenging enough to keep you interested and involved, but not impossible to achieve, says Dr. Reiner. You have to push yourself a little bit to hone your skill. If the craft is too humdrum, you'll get bored and stop.

Enjoy the process. Rather than focusing on the end product, heed the process. "What you make is only the residue of how much fun you’ve had," says Diane Ericson, a fabric artist, teacher and creativity coach in Aptos, California. The key is to revel in the task of creating, rather than just mindlessly pushing to finish a project.

“The act of performing a craft is incompatible with worry, anger, obsession and anxiety, and that’s one of the ways in which we believe crafts are healing,” adds Dr. Reiner. “Crafts make you concentrate and focus on the here and now.”

Don't be a perfectionist. Yes, you want your craft to challenge you. But don't go crazy. Many crafters tend to beat themselves up if they do a less-than-stellar job, and end up negating the health-promoting benefits. “Give yourself permission to be imperfect and to play,” advises Ericson. “If you have to make a project just right, you set yourself up with just one more chore to accomplish. You lose the joy and the fun.”

There are no mistakes in creating, only lessons. “Many inventions are the result of so-called mistakes,” notes McMeekin. “When you suspend judgment, you open your mind to creating extraordinary things.”

Don't compare yourself to others. “It can be deadly to compare your work to that of others,” warns Ericson. “That puts a damper on both your creativity and your enjoyment. Remember, you're on your own journey.” So, instead of measuring yourself against someone else's yardstick, try to find inspiration in the work of others. If you do your craft for yourself and yourself alone, you'll have fun—and you'll reap the healing benefits for your body, mind and soul.

Constant source of inspiration on the internet... ANNIE'S PLACE Blog

One of my craft friends keeps finding gorgeous crochet blogs.  I particularly loved this one.  Salivating over the things that she makes.
Check out this great blog:

World wide Crochet ... an international language

I really love this blog as it shows one woman's travels around to different parts of the world and the crochet she finds or seeks out along the way.

Lots of crazy crochet groups out there...I am not alone!

Even Facebook has a page...of course!

There are SO MANY crochet groups online, but I have found a very good concise one that I will invest more time into is this one... so click on the link and check it out.  There are a series of 'lessons' that you can follow.

The online community is massive.  It's just a matter of looking and choosing to your own tastes.

OLEK, Polish artist, taking yarn-bombing and crochet art to an extreme!

So I thought I was mildly obsessed with constructing my new blanket but I have just stumbled upon this amazing Polish artist who is now based in NYC.

Here is a link to her website.  Go and have a look around, she is pretty amazing!

Stitched up!

Okay, the time has come.... Can not make afghan squares indefinitely so last night I googled how to stitch these squares together.  There are some odd bods on You Tube that belong to the crochet fraternity but I did find one eventually that seemed to click with me.
Assignments all handed in on Friday, so finally felt the freedom to spend some guilt free time on the crochet.

Have had a very good weekend crocheting it together.  The final photo of this post is showing it at not even halfway there but I love it already.

Starting to sew the squares together  .... exciting

Another Recruit!!!

Another 'craft night' at a friends house...and another one wanting to give crochet a whirl!

Jayne picked it up in ridiculously quick time.  Can't put it down to my teaching methods, I just think that some people are better than others (me!) at picking up new craft techniques.

Jayne starting off her crochet square using one of mine as a guide.

Everyone had their wee projects on the go.

A bit less in the way of liquid refreshments as it was a mid-week night, I had an 8am lecture the next morning and everyone else had work or kids to get off to school.  Was a very sensible sedate evening!

Jayne with her finished product on her knee.  I was so impressed!!

My latest design...has a nice wee star/flower in the centre.  A bit different from your standard Afghan square.

Passing on the greatness that is crochet!!

Been a while since I posted.... Have had a busy couple of months on fieldwork for my course.  Have still been sneaking in a few squares as a form of relaxation.

We had another catch up night with the craft girls (ex kindy mums)  Craft group really is just code word for wine/cider, food and laughs.
Plenty of the above was had by those of us who could make this session, this time at Jo's.  One of the mums had already had a drinks function and potluck dinner and rolled in the door full of the joys.  It was with great interest to see how her sewing skills would go with the task of sewing on badges on her sons Scout uniform :)

I have discovered a slightly different way of doing my squares and this has ignited the obsession even more.

I'm delighted to report that I have hooked another person into the dastardly claws of crochet.  Leanne was wanting to learn and picked it up 50 times faster than myself and she has just said that she has taken to crocheting at work...and it's only been 6 days!!

I will post a few photos of the 'session' the other night.

A Present

This is a scarf I finished a couple of weeks ago for a very good friends birthday.  I couldn't post it before then incase she saw it on the blog.
She was opening her present this week with great trepidation as she knew I had crocheted 'something'.

Ha! I think she actually liked it!  My daughter and sister have ordered scarves from me now.

Taking shape

I had my nephew Sam around here this afternoon.... wet old day out so I suggested he sort out my afghan squares so that he could see how the rug was going to look.
This is the sort of job he loves doing with his nana..but she is away travelling at the moment so I pretended for half an hour that I was Annie!

He did a great job of balancing the lights and darks of the various squares.  I think I may need to consult him on the layout before I sew it all together!

My boy showing no interest whatsoever!  He is used to my mess and creations all over the house.
Sam busy at work though.

Sam made me get my skates on and do the last layer around a square so we had the perfect rectangle!  And he had the stop watch on me for the last white edging.  Took me 11.30 mins!  Kind of shows the work involved for one square!!

The Crafty Girls

Had a lovely catch up with a group of women who formed a craft group a few years back.  Over the years, others have joined.

I knew most of them from our kids kindy days.  Most of the mums have a long and lovely history together and the group proved to be about much more than just a craft group.  They have been a support for each other over the years and there is always lots of laughter and stories.... I can forsee them as 80 year olds, still having these marvellous catch ups.

There were a mix of crafts that evening.  Two of the mums had three sons heading off to Scout Jamboree later in the year and were doing a mad card making effort.  One of the other mums was working on a cross stitch for one of her sisters triplets as a baby present...only 6 years after the birth :)

Great night, lots of food, wine and laughs ... and yes, we did manage some craft work!

What a great turn out last night. Wonderful to see everyone. Have a great weekend!!

Crocheting with a vengeance!

Right, nightmare of assessment week out the way now.  I have a small window before my 7 week placement starts so I will be crocheting like the clappers!!

This exercise for class was only ever meant to take 15 hours, to get a taste of an unfamiliar occupation but I have to admit I'm absolutely 'hooked' now (haha)

My friend located my missing crochet hook at her house from last Sunday when I sat there in the sun of their semi renovated house, drinking my usual 3 cups of Sunday afternoon tea, crocheting away. (My kids think I'm weird taking my bag of wool and hook to their house but I like to justify my 3 cups of tea!)

So I have made many more afghan squares, and I have made myself a lovely cosy scarf.  Still a bit wonky in places but I figure by the time it is wrapped around, it won't be too noticeable.

EXCITED!  Going to my first girls night out craft group tomorrow.  A lovely group of ex-kindy mums have welcomed me into their wee cluster and I will go and experience what 'crafting together' really means.  I understand there is wine, supper and lots of laughs involved so it can't be all bad  :)

Have had a few nasty busy weeks with assignments...but I'm baaaaack!
And once I re-locate my crochet hook I will be back in action.

Going to attach a bog from someone else here, as much for my own records as anything.  Will give this one a whirl, minus the buttons.

And will also attach my Pinterest board as I have found lots of beautiful bits lately.

Getting there :-/

Ummmm, blog malfunction.  Don't know why I have one massive photo amongst the others on my last post.

Afghans are multiplying!

Made a couple of these most days but had a particularly nice afternoon at a friends house with my wee bag of wool.
Several cups of tea later on a rubbish wet Sunday afternoon, while being enlightened by our teenage daughters over the joys of You Tubers (I still don't get it) and I now have enough for a blanket ...for a doll.
